As a communication specialist, I know just how crucial clear and concise writing can be for achieving your organization’s goals. Whether you’re communicating with donors, volunteers, or the public, your essay can make or break your reputation and effectiveness. That’s why reading books on communication is always helpful, and here I’m going to summarize some of the tips discussed in the elements of style book by William Strunk Jr. by putingt together these seven tips for effective writing;

Divide your topics into paragraphs and treat each as a separate unit. This will help build a coherent structure with a natural flow.

Active voice

Place the most important words at the beginning or end of each sentence to help readers quickly understand the purpose of each paragrah. Also, use active voice: Replace passive voice sentences with a subject-verb sequence to create a more direct and impactful message.

Cut the Clutter

Write sentences in a positive form, avoiding negative words such as “not” as much as possible. Also, Cut the Clutter: Eliminate unnecessary words and instead use descriptive verbs to create concise and impactful sentences.

Last but not least

End with Emphasis

Mix short and long sentences to engage the reader and maintain a natural flow.
